A reminder – why this project is taking place
The Chanate/Mendocino Area Sewer Replacement Project is making major improvements to the North Trunk Sewer Main, a pipeline which collects sewer flows from homes and businesses in the area of Chanate Road and Mendocino Avenue. This project will upgrade and improve performance of the collection system by replacing or relocating sections of aging, inefficient, or inaccessible sewer pipelines, as well as certain water pipelines. Work is taking place on portions of Chanate Road, Mendocino Avenue, Plum Drive, Lomitas Avenue, Lomitas Lane, Strawberry Drive, and certain easements not in roadways (click on map to enlarge).
As residents in the project area already know, during this significant construction there is unavoidable noise, dust, traffic delays/detours, and changes in on-street parking availability. Please remember that once construction ends, your homes and businesses will have an improved, more reliable, efficient, and durable sewer and water infrastructure.
We apologize for the disruption and inconvenience as the project continues!
Once complete, this project will:
- Reduce the potential for sewer overflows
- Protect the environment, including Paulin Creek and its riparian habitat
- Provide improved and safer access for routine pipeline inspection and maintenance
- Improve water pressure and flows
- Ensure your homes and businesses can depend on a safe, reliable sewer system, for the long-term

Sewer pipeline installation work continues during westbound upper Chanate Road detour
The detour of westbound traffic (including bicyclists) on Chanate Road between Terra Linda Drive and Humboldt Street will be in effect into September, 2021, to allow for installation of a large sewer pipeline under Chanate Road. If possible, members of the public should avoid the general area of construction throughout the project period. When using the detour route, please allow plenty of extra travel time. Click here for a map of the detour. During the detour, only eastbound, one-way traffic on Chanate Road is available. Pedestrian access is maintained on the north side of Chanate Road.
Although much of the current work is underground (picture at right shows workers in a ramming pit), motorists in the area should watch for flaggers and work crews, drill rigs, cranes, excavators, trucks, and other equipment, and be prepared for intermittent traffic delays. Click here for a cross section of typical bore pits similar to the work on Chanate Road.
In coordination with the City’s Fire, Police, and Public Works departments, the project team has prepared contingency plans to facilitate emergency situations that may occur during the detour of Westbound Chanate Road. If an evacuation is called for, construction on the project will be halted and, if necessary, the travel direction on Chanate Road (eastbound only during the detour) will be reversed to provide westbound-only movement for travel out of the area. Please be sure to review the City’s Know Your Ways Out web page and neighborhood travel route maps.
