Chanate Road westbound lane closure and detour continue
The detour of westbound traffic (including bicyclists) on Chanate Road between Terra Linda Drive and Humboldt Street will be in effect through September 2021. During the detour, only eastbound, one-way traffic on Chanate Road is available. Pedestrian access is maintained on the north side of Chanate Road. If possible, please avoid the general area of construction throughout the project period. When using the detour route, allow plenty of extra travel time. Click here for a map of the detour.

In coordination with the City’s Fire, Police, and Public Works departments, the project team has prepared contingency plans to facilitate emergency situations that may occur during the detour of Westbound Chanate Road. If an evacuation is called for, construction on the project will be halted and, if necessary, the travel direction on Chanate Road (eastbound only during the detour) will be reversed to provide westbound-only movement for travel out of the area.

Temporary traffic signs

Temporary traffic signal lights now in place will be used only in the event of an urgent public safety issue requiring westbound traffic movement or emergency vehicle access on Chanate Road. Do not proceed when signal is red. Please be sure to review the City’s Know Your Ways Out web page and neighborhood travel route maps.

Work happening underground and above-ground on Chanate Road
A lot of the work for the last few weeks has been underground, with crews working to install large pipelines horizontally at the bottom of the bore/ram pits, up to 40-feet deep. Now, motorists will see more activity above-ground as some bore pits are backfilled, and equipment/materials are moved between pit locations. If driving on Chanate Road, please proceed carefully and watch for flaggers and work crews, drill rigs, cranes, excavators, trucks, and other equipment. Be prepared for intermittent traffic delays. Click here for a cross section of typical bore pits similar to the work on Chanate Road.

Reminder: kids are back in school – use extra caution
Kids are back to school in-person, and that means more traffic in the mornings and afternoons. It also means more people on the detour routes, who may not be familiar with those roadways. We’re asking everyone to please take a moment to check your speed while driving on Chanate Road, and on the detour streets. Allow extra time, and always obey the speed limits on all streets. A little extra caution goes a long way!
